Can you pay a funearal of in installment after it's happened?
I'm sorry for such a sad question. But my father in law passed away yesterday and we are concerned about paying for the funeral as we're responible for it. I live in the UK. I am not entitled to any benifits as far as I am aware because he's American. What do I do about paying the funeral, will they let me pay a payment plan?
I get some housing benifit so I would be elegiable on that front. But it says that because he wasn't ordinarily a resident we wouldn't be elegiable....

Talk to the funeral director - if they are aware of the circumstances they are often willing to help. If you or another family member is receiving benefits, then you can claim towards the cost. Its been a long time since I had to deal with anything like this, so my advise would be to contact the citizens advise bureau who will be able to give you up to date information.

Depends on the funeral director, some will but it's worth having a word with them. As for benefits, just apply anyway you can only get knocked back and who knows if he's been living here for years then go for it.

Here in the US you CAN do payment plans; I did with my husbands funeral.
But check first with any funeral director you may talk with. Some are willing to wheel and deal, some won't give you the time of day.

Did he have no assets of his own? If he had savings, you may be able to get some of them released to pay for the funeral. I don't know how it works in the USA, but I did this in the UK when my partner died. I did this through a solicitor.

i doubt it very much they do payment plans here ...however you can apply for a funeral grant via the benefits but the person who is making the claim needs to be on benefits i.e imcome supoort etc ,you only get about £2k (i think) but enough to give a basic funeral .
