Why has the prices for food risen? What caused the prices for food to rise?

sorry this is for my homework, anyway if you could also put the reference that would be nice :)

    For one, the currency is being inflated, and food is priced in nominal dollars. Secondly, US subsidies for ethanol divert corn production to fuel use from food use.

    However, if you look at the REAL price of food (net of inflation) it is much lower than it was 30 years ago.
