Gameness double-weave (pearl) are good bang for the buck gi's. The cross-stitched "rip-stop" pants are the way you want to go as well. Single-weave gis are a waste of money and tear too quickly. The rip-stop pants are golden and outlast the standard pants by a considerable margin.
If you're looking for a great gi to last you a long time, consider Mizuno or Howard. They are the Cadillac of gis and last forever. I've had my Mizuno for 11 years and it's still going strong! But, Mizuno and Howards will be a greater upfront investment--like anything else, you get what you pay for.

It depends on which bjj you are talking about. Alot of bjj is very sport oriented but still very effective in a fight. The bjj developed by the Gracie family however is geared more toward a real street fight, much more so than any other martial art I have seen or trained in. Gracie jj is the most well developed, no nonsense martial art I have ever seen. Remember it was developed by a smaller man to defeat larger much stronger opponents and perfected through years of actual, real fighting. No matter who you are or what style martial art you practice you can only benefit from learning the fighting techniques of real Gracie jiu hit Su.
