How to get rid of mic echo and feeback?

Okay..I'm kinda embarrassed to ask this question but I've went over most of the questions, tried the suggestions and I still get feedback and echo. I have a headset on a laptop, I've adjusted volume and mic boost until my eyes bleed and I still keep getting it. I have a Logitech headset with the mic the flips down to the mouth, could this be the issue? If anybody using this has a decent level set for it, would really appreciate the help. Thnx in advance :D

Windows XP? Windows Vista or 7? The methods are different.

In Windows 7, right click the speaker by the clock, recording devices, right click the mic, properties, listen tab at the top, unchech "listen to this device". Apply and ok. Restart your computer. Feedback should be gone and turn the mic boost down or off if needed but with a headset you should be good to go now.
