Hemoglobin level of 4? How bad is that?
A few months ago i was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. When i first went to the hospital my hemoglobin level was 4, and the nurses and everyone at the hospital were so amazed i was still in my feet and laughing.(i just felt dehydrated n weak)..i had to get 4 bags of bloods transfusion...and then another one a wk later because i was still losing blood. Hemoglobin is the oxgen carrying cells in our blood. Without those, our cells will die without enough oxygen.
Hemoglobin levels should be 12-17, depending on your gender and age. Once you drop below 10 or 11, a blood transfusion is usually necessary. Your level of 4 was VERY dangerous! It is very surprising that you did not die. You are really lucky.
Ulcerative colitis can cause bleeding in your gastrointestinal system, so it is important to watch your stool (poop) for any signs of blood and notify your doctor right away if you notice it, especially with your history.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Your hemoglobin is low. Your organs are not getting enough oxygen, so cells die. This happens at a super slow rate but its not good. Your probably iron deficient. You lose iron when you bleed which is why women tend to have this problem more than men. Getting iron in a pure vegetarian diet is very difficult. I understand your desire to avoid meat as I am an on and off vegetarian. I would strongly recommend eating some meat if you can't stomach iron pills. When your hemoglobin is low you will feel tired, weak, loose hair, and be irritable maybe not yet but the longer its low the less oxygen you body has.

The fact that you got 4 units of packed red blood cells is a huge indication. Your normal volume of packed red blood cells in the average person is around 6-8. I have seen people with even lower hemoglobin levels than yours, but it is rare.
Also, if your more familiar with hematocrits, multiply the hemoglobin by 3, and that's roughly your hematocrit. You had a 12% hematocrit, when a healthy woman should have between 36-42%. That means you had about a third of your normal red blood cell volume. Not good at all.
