    assuming [] for abs value

    [x+2]=x-4

    in this case you would work

    x-4=+(x+2)

    and

    x-4=-(x+2)

    [x+2]=[x-4]

    (x-4)= x+2, no solution for this one.

    (x-4)=-(x+2)

    for inequality

    [x-3]<[x+4]

    you work the same steps, keep the <> signs

    remember to switch sign when you have to multiply/divide both sides by a negative number.
