Pier fishing at Pillar Point Harbor?

Hello,

I'd like to try this, and have the following questions:

(1) What are the most common fish sought by pier anglers on Johnson Pier? (According to the info online, they are perch and flounder. Any other experiences?)

(2) Are there places near Johnsons Pier that rent fishing gear for this? Most of the stores I can find online focus on fishing boat trips, and say nothing about renting poles, reels, and leaders.

(3) What fish are best to target pier fishing in October?

Thanks much.

Check with the local bait shops in the area. Hopefully you should be able to get some useful information around there from some of the locals.

I know this is a really old question...but here I fish at HMB a lot so here's some info you might find helpful:

    1) fishing is not allowed on Johnson Pier. There is a small, public fishing pier built nearby called Pillar Point Fishing Pier. Primarily I pull up jacksmelt and various types of rockcod. I've also caught mackerel there once (think it was a fluke) and have seen someone pull up a skate once.

    2) There's a bait store near the pier that I've surprisingly never visited myself. Not sure if they do any gear rental though.

    3) I would go after either jacksmelt or rockcod. However fishing is generally slow on the pier. You can always fish the nearby jetties. People tend to have a lot more success there. Just watch your step and be prepared for snags.
