I've been told you can use your own weapon in combat is that true?

I was told if you have your own rifle (Let's take my Lewis Machine and Tool MRP for example), you can use it in the feild as long as they clear it. A recruiter told me this so Im a bit sceptic about it because you know what they say about recruiters... "Used car salesmen". Also; Since the FN SCAR-H is now the "choice" of SOCOM will they let you use it instead of the M16/M4 if you have one? Dont get me wrong the M16/AR15 style rifles are GREAT but Im a bit curious. No this has nothing to do with Call of Duty, I have fired several rifles before and am pretty decent with my LMT MRP (AR type, 5.56 NATO/.223 Rem.)

Update:

Ok thanks. That's what I thought but wasn't sure. Now can you buy your rifle when you're done serving? I've heard that a lot from active duty and retired guys but I figured they were just pulling my chain.

Update 2:

Cool thanks alot for clearing this up guys!

Whoever told you that you can take your personal firearms into combat is a moron or an idiot - take your pick.

Whoever told you that you can buy your issued weapon when you leave service is an idiot or a moron - take your pick again.

And don't let some retired guy or veteran tell you that things were different when they were in. Since the modern American military came about during WW I, it has been against regulations to use your own firearms - not to say that it hasn't happened, but it is against regulations. American Soldiers have also not been allowed to purchase their issue weapons ever - not to say that troops have not managed to take stuff home when they leave service.

Nope. You will get what you're given. You have absolutely no choice, the closest option to what gun you will receive depends on your MOS, other than that, the Military chooses what role you will play in your MOS, therefor you really have no choice. You will love what ever gun you are given, like it's your wife, except you will treat her better!

    Technically, you can

But, no commander has ever approved it before.

And no commander will ever approve it

    2. Plus, you would need a Class lll firearms license to own one and the weapon would cost around $30,000

If that's the case then personal weapons never receive clearance.
