Do this to get back to Classic (which is the only old version you can get back)----quick and easy.
Yahoo has "hidden" this link (below) in the middle of one of their "useless" pages---and it has been reported to be a permanent fix---and even stops future "prompts to upgrade"
It's different than some of the other links, that have been given, which are only temporary.
Click this link:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/ymail/contex...
When the page opens---scroll down about midway until you see this---"What if I don’t want to upgrade to the newest version of Yahoo! Mail"?----IF you do not want to upgrade, please "click here" to use Yahoo! Mail Classic.
("click here" is a blue link).
Then--!wham!--before you can blink an eye, you're back in Classic.

I did it by accident using either Google Chrome or Opera to check mail, I don't remember which, and it said the browser isn't compatible with it. So in order to check mail it had to set itself back to the way it was, which is how I wanted it anyway.

an extremely stable question I actual have same situation this one is ineffective to me too. in basic terms discovered it! pass to Mail > recommendations (distinctly much top appropriate hand part of web page) and click swap to classic. stupid me I hadn't attempted that one the two.
