Linux Gnome 3 vs Unity Downloads and User Friendliness?

I know some people are hardcore Gnome 3 supporters. I use Unity myself and it really made me a convert to Linux. Mostly because it is more user friendly. I just installed Gnome 3 on an older computer. I have spent half a day trying to install things. With Unity it is just a few clicks and I am done. With Gnome 3 I can't find anything in the Download Manager, things I download won't install even though it says they are for Ubuntu.

I am at a loss but I also appreciate I am a Linux n00b. So two questions

1. How in the heck do you install ANYTHING on Gnome 3 (VLC would be a good example since I have spent all day trying that one)

2. With all of the difficulty Gnome 3 has given me vs the simplicity of Unity, what is the argument for Gnome 3?

GNOME 3 is unstable and Unity is just dreadful. It will be some time until there will be an interface any where near as good as GNOME 2

Ubuntu is no longer the Linux distro. that others aspire to. Canonical have become arrogant and ignored users needs however well voiced across the many Forums that make reference to Ubuntu. In a word if you don't like Unity then its tough and they simply don't care. For example Ubuntu 11.10 will not offer the classic GNOME Desktop and it will not include the Synaptic Package Manager despite the fact many users do not want these changes. Have they been taking tips from Microsoft when it comes to not caring what the user wants. I used to have much time for Ubuntu starting with Ubuntu 6.10 finishing with the last decent release which was Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Unity is poorly laid out, it freezes, crashes etc. etc. etc. hell its unusable

    1. Use Gnome's Ubuntu Software Center, and just search for VLC, if you didn't try that already.

    2. Unity works best on LCD Monitors that are Touch Screen-capable. And, users of older Linux Distros, are more likely to prefer the Gnome GUI. While Smart phone users, would likely prefer Unity.

The Download Manager is "sorta-like" Windows Updates, it patches Ubuntu.
