When buying/aquiring a used crib mattress, does it really matter if there are tears in the corners?

If you're putting a sheet over it anyway, I'm having trouble seeing what the problem would be. I could duct tape the corners? Any mothers out there with useful advice? This is my first, and we're a little tight on budget.

If you must buy used, you can find one that is in better condition. If you haven't given birth yet, you don't need to put a baby in a crib right away. There are a couple different options that are cheaper, like a bassinet, while you save up for a crib mattress.

Also, consider that a baby who is getting bigger can pull at sheets, lift corners, get at tears and/or duct tape, and get it in their mouths and choke.

I know there are some articles and web sites out there about buying baby stuff on a budget, I remember from when my kids were really small. The temptation is great to go overboard buying, whether or not you have the money. Good luck with the baby!

We are on a budget too and i have gotten most of my stuff used. The one thing i wont buy used though is the crib matress and the carseat. We got our matress at walmart for just 35 bucks. As someone else said, kids are messy. Who knows whats been on that mattress sheet over it or not. Also sheets tend to pop off on the corners, leaving it exposed. Id say just get a new one.

You should NEVER buy a used mattress! Seriously, it's the one thing people generally tend to buy new, always. You can buy a used crib but you need to get a new mattress. Many studies believe babies who sleep on used mattresses are at a higher risk of SIDS.

Unless you know where the mattress came from I would recommend a new one. You have to think about bed bugs and lice and things like that. Walmart has some mattresses that run around $50, ask someone to get it for your as a baby shower gift.

would never ever buy a used mattress... they are risky and can have all sorts of toxins from over the years from the first baby that slept in them.. a sheet won't stop that.. they can cause SIDS... they're just nasty! lots of people buy used cribs but used mattresses are another thing altogether.

Don't buy it used or accept a used one. No matter how clean it looks, you get moulds and fungus growing inside over time and baby breathes in the spores. Tears are completely irrelevant.

Also don't buy a used car seat.

Everything else is fine used. Those two need to be new.
