I want to own a pet a bird?

I really miss having a dog in my life, but i now live in an apartment and can't have a dog, and I don't want a cat. What type of birds are good ones for pets? Yes I know I don't know alot about birds, hence why i am asking before I get one, so please no one answer saying don't get something you don't know about. Just tell me what your refrences are for birds you know are good pets, and can be trained, so i'm not on google researching every type of bird out there lol.

you should get a cockatiel, i have one( actuality three), and they are great pets, best to get a female if you want peace and quite and don't want bite hard. and the females tend to be a little more skittish though, butt they only nipe your finger but not hard. either is good they are for beginners with birds and love to sit and relax on our shoulder. and they are very pretty birds.

    hope this was helpful!

they are about 460 at a pet store, good price for a bird. :)

Don't get a sun conure if you're a first time owner, and in an apartment. They're loud and demanding and can be hard to handle at times. You will get evicted from your apartment if you have a sun conure. You didn't day what kind of personality you want, and how long you're gonna be home everyday. I recommend getting something small, personable, and quiet. (for a parrot.) Your best bet is a parakeet or cockatiel. They are really underestimated and make great companions. Parakeets should be kept with other keets, they do best that way. A cockatiel can be kept alone if you give lots of attention. I have a parrot rescue, and everyone loves the cockatiels. A male is louder, they whistle all the time and can learn to say a few words. Budgies make constant noise, but it's quiet. They can become good talkers and chatter all day, with tiny voices. They're both good birds and you should always adopt, that way you have a support system if there are any problems.

Don't get a bird because it's a good talker or it's colorful. You won't be able to deal with their demanding natures, noise, and moodiness.

Stay away from people that try to get you to get these birds, they're not good 1st time birds or good for apartments/condos.

Eclectus (they are labelled quiet but youtube search "eclectus screaming" and you will know they won't work.

A cockatoo. They're the loudest birds in the world and are the ones that overfill the parrot shelters. Only experienced and patient parrot owners can handle a cockatoo.

Sun Conure/Blue Crown/Cherry Head/Mitred/Dusky/Jenday/Nanday conures. They're gorgeous and funny, but are LOUD. You will be kicked out of your apartment. There are no quiet conures.

African Grey: They're enticing to get because of their intelligence, but are hard to handle, can become aggressive, neurotic and more unless you're experienced. They also are loud with their screams and calls, and talk constantly. Loudly.

ANY kind of macaw. They're big (or mini) and striking. But they can be aggressive and hard to handle. They're the 2nd loudest birds.

Indian Ringneck/Alexandrine parakeets: they're beautiful and good talkers but are generally aloof, nippy, and are very high-pitched and loud.

The list goes on, but those are birds you should avoid.

If you want something colorful and bigger, try a mutation color cockatiel, or an English Budgie. The mutation colors on the 'tiels are elegant and pretty, and English Budgies are about the size of a cockatiel and can be bright blue, green, yellow, and more.

Also, adopt!!! A rescue parrot is a wonderful animal, and rescues will give you lifelong support of any problems come up. Always go and interact with the parrots you're interested in, something new might come up and you may find their personality isn't right for you.

I own a senegal parrot, and he is a very nice companion. :)

They are playful and can learn to talk and generally will grow close to you. They are very intelligent and each have their own personalities. They are also considered some of the quieter parrots so they will be good for an apartment.

You will definitely have to research them and really think about it if you want one however because they can live a very long time and it is a big commitment if you get one. You will have to let them out everyday and give them some attention and playtime.

They can be quite pricey as you will need to get a large enough cage and plenty of toys (but if you're crafty you can make them for cheaper!), but I'm sure you can look in the classifieds for people wanting to give their birds away. It may be a good choice for a newcomer to birds because it will likely already be trained and may already know some words which will be more fun for you.

Here is a video of a cute little bird and you can see how well they learn and how they bond with their owners.

And also a page about senegals as pets.

If you are not looking for quite as much commitment I would recommend getting something like a budgie, canary, or even a cockatiel instead of a parrot. I believe they are more independent than a parrot and will be better off if you can't give them as much attention whereas a parrot can get very lonely and depressed even without company.

For apartment life I sugest either a Quaker, Cockatiel, Lovebird, Parrotlet, senegal, or Green cheek conures

Most birds are too loud for apartments though there are always exceptions.

Quakers are medium size birds can learn to talk and are very smart and cuddly.

Love birds are small and very active they can be very bold and out going

Parrotlets are very tiny they have small voices and bodies but can have the attitude of a large Macaw.

Green cheeks are great starter birds they are recomended by alot of breeders as they are easy to train and bond willingly.

Cockatiels as well are great birds they are medium size and and not nearly as loud as most there size. they can be great companions I dont find they are too cuddly but they can remain tame after long periods of time.

Senegals are quiet and very adventurous.

out of the top sugested the most loyal of birds I have owned are lovebirds and quakers they tend to bond to one owner for life.

A parakeet is the best and most popular bird sold anywhere. They are wonderful, and friendly and easy to care for, and live long...many years..if taken care of. To do that, and to learn more about parakeets, go to this web site which will help you to understand how great a parakeet is. Get just one if you want it to buddy you as his friend. Good luck!
