Algebra 1 question, probably easy (URGENT!!!!!!)?
I am studying for my algebra test tomorrow. I thought I had this section perfected, but I decided to do one more problem, and BAM, I have problems with it.
It's -2/5p + 2 = 1/5p + 11
The #/#p's are fractions btw
So my question is which side do you use as like your main one? Like I didn't know if I should subtract 2 from 11, or subtract 11 from 2, etc. So should i start with the 1/5p side or the -2/5p side, how do I know which side to start from in any equation?
Also, please do the problem and show steps? Please, your helping a troubled 13 year old get through his math test (and I still have 2 other tests to study for tomorrow, so please help!!!)

You move the ps to one side, and the numbers to the other :)
-2/5p - 1/5p = 11 - 2
-3/5p = 9
-3 = 45p
p = -15
I hope this helps. :)

It doesn't matter which side you start with, but many math teacher like to keep the variables on the left.
First, you'd subtract 1/5p from both sides to get -3/5p+2=11, then subtract 2 from both sides to get -3/5p=9. Divide both sides by -3/5 or multiply by -5/3 to get
p=-15.
Hope this helped :D Good luck!

You can go either way
First I'll move the p's to the left
-2/5p + 2 = 1/5p + 11
-2/5p - 1/5p = 11 - 2
-3/5p = 9
p = 9 * (-5/3) = -45/3 = -15
Now I'll move the p's to the right
-2/5p + 2 = 1/5p + 11
2 - 11 = 1/5p + 2/5p
-9 = 3/5p
p = -9 * 5/3 = -45/3 = -15
See, it works either way!!

I would do it like this.
-2/5p +2 = 1/5p+11
minus 1/5p both sides
-3/5p+2 = 11
minus 2 both sides
-3/5p = 9
divide both sides by -3/5
p = -15
now i would check by putting -15 in for p use parenthesis () when substituting.
I checked it on my calculator and it all works out p = -15

-2/5p + 2 = 1/5p + 11
2 = (3/5)p + 11 {added (2/5)p to both sides}
-9 = (3/5)p {subtracted 11 from both sides}
p = -15 {divided both sides by 3/5, multiplying by reciprocal, 5/3}

Is it (-2/5)p or -2/(5p)? Same thing with the other one. Is it (1/5)p or 1/(5p)? Are the p's in the denominator?
