The best technique I found is to always remain a witness to whatever happens inside you. Someone compliments you, watch the good feeling arising, how it stays for a while inside you and then drifts away like a cloud. Same thing when someone insults you. Watch the anger arising, watch how it surrounds you and tries to suck you in, watch the energy vibrating and then again watch how slowly it dissipates.

If you can always remember to remain a watcher, without being identified by either good feelings or bad, by anger or kindness... if you can remain just a witness without making any effort to manipulate your energies, without judging something as good or bad, without attachment or rejection - soon you will find yourself going beyond both compliments and insults. You will have transcended both without making an effort to suppress or reject. By remaining a witness, a distance arises between you and the emotion. It no longer effects you.

That's what they call in Zen effortless effort.

I remember hearing a lecture by Hugh Lynn Cayce, son of the late great psychic -Edgar Cayce.

He was stressing the importance of not being swayed or hurt by the words of others

Someone asked him about compliments. He said, "be not hurt by harsh words."

the man protested, "this wasn't harsh words, it was a compliment."

Hugh Lynn answered, "those can be some of the harshest" because we are quick to accept them.

Just by being thankful for the friendship and companionship, we all need nourishing from time to time... when we compliment, others it may just be by getting along... a wonderful glow of fellowship...

and a needed lift to us all... takes everyone out of the basement suites states of the soul... into the Penthouse of love...

i don't see compliments as a bad thing at all, nor do i get Head lifted...

rather I become heart enhanced... and lifted into a wonderful sense of Us ness... sweet to be in the air of that.

i see these not as vain surrenders, to feed the ego, but enhancements to bring joy into our heart realms. Sunshine and sunny affections, warm us all. hugs to all:))

    Love

Look at the person complimenting you through a mirror when they are doing it. This is similar to the way you defeat Medusa. :)
