Has it ever had gas in the past?

Ask your gas supplier to carry out a free survey for you to see where the pipes actually are as they may well be one just by your back door!

To have the gas company come out and dig up the road/pathway/front-garden could be expensive at today's rates so have the survey carried out first.

Our house was built in 1946 and it had no gas in it. We checked with the gas company and they found that the pipes were laid from the mains under the drive to the side of the kitchen but never used! All we had to pay for (£400) was for the men to dig up the drive, fit new pipes and a gas meter to the outside wall in a box and that was it. it was all done in a morning. Then our heating engineers just had to fit their pipes from the new boiler to the new gas meter.

    Easy!

The likelyhood is after 40 years the mains have been replaced in the highway and yours will have been left off as it was not in use.You will need to contact a gas transporter ie Swalec, BG etc for a survey to be carried out and a quote. The price can vary with not only distance but how much is on private ground and highway and what hasa to be dug up and reinstated. ie A concrete drive will cost more than a lawn or flower bed. You can sometimes get the price reduced if you excavate/reinstate all the private part.(on your ground)

If the house hasn't had gas for 40 years then there must be gas in the property if it was there 40 years ago? if you have to get it replaced and connected to the road it will be around £4000

Get a quote from the gas company and do your sums. It may be worth it and you should be able to incorporate the cost in the mortgage.

If it once had gas it should only be a reconnection which should be free. Check it out.
