Wilde was saying that sometimes, it takes strength to do what you need to do to be happy. He was gay, and homosexual relationships were illegal at the time, and it was quite brave of him to yield to his temptation for male companionship. He refused to ignore his true nature, even though it may have been easier to have just tried to suppress it and live by the conventions of the time, conventions that he did not believe in. I think that he was right; you only live once, and it often does take strength and courage to be true to yourself and do what you must to be happy and fulfilled.
