How many of you became atheists after reading the bible?

I know I did.

I know a lot of christians say that the new testament makes the old testament laws unapplicable, but in matthew jesus himself said that he was not here to do away the old law.

When I read leviticus and numbers, I was appalled. I was also disturbed by how there are two different versions of the ten commandments, and how violent it is. I couldn't understand how a perfect god could contradict himself so much. And then *kapow!* I didn't believe anymore. It was like finding out Santa didn't exist.

Now, it just sickens me. I've been an atheist for several years now.

Who else has had a similar experience? What was it like?

Update:

Wow, from some of the christian responses, it appears you believe that god makes some people too stupid to understand the bible? So you're saying then that your god decided ahead of time to make me too stupid to understand the bible, which would mean that god decides your fate, and free will has no part in it?

Man, so glad I don't believe that **** anymore.

As for the rest of you, great responses. My partner was raised atheist, and doesn't understand what it's like to deconvert because he's never had that experience. If you've never been there, you're lucky. :)

That was definitely a big part of it, but my journey to free thought was a much more drawn out process. It took me almost 20 years before I finally realized that I was an atheist. I think the biggest thing for me was sitting in Sunday school class listening to the teacher tell us that evolution was a lie. At that moment I knew I was not in the same boat as all of the other kids.

"Why is it that many former Christians become atheist after analyzing the bible?" i could ought to assert a huge area of it extremely is the churches' fault, as maximum churches never practice the "no longer trouble-free" areas of the Bible, so whilst a individual receives to a variety of areas and sees it extremely is massively distinctive from the "sugar lined God" that they are taught approximately they have an inclination to reject the Bible and Christianity simply by fact they think of "how can God be loving, yet do all those issues". "Or, that some human beings, whilst attempting to discover info and help for the claims contained in the bible, become atheist." i've got not heard of that formerly, notwithstanding I even have heard the alternative going on... (i.e. C.S. Lewis) "does not it look that analyzing the bible could carry one closer with God?" with suitable examining it does, the problem is that human beings tend to study what's asserted yet stay unaware of the small print contained in the story that the Bible does not point out, working example the Bible does not talk approximately how Baal (the "best" God contained in the area that the Israelites had conquered) replaced into worshiped by utilising putting a stay toddler on a heated statue (in reality cooking it alive) as a sacrifice

Not an athiest, but not a Christian, either. Ex-Lutheran, and reading the Bible just reaffirmed my decision to walk away from the faith I was raised in. Every time I read it(and I have, several times, different versions, too), I just can't figure out why anyone would believe any of it.

The bible doesn't actually give good arguments for becoming an atheist, it just gives you a lot of motivation to better educate yourself about the claims contained in the bible. The bible motivated me to look elsewhere for "the other side of the story" I guess you could say.

The book that solidified my Atheism was "Atheism: The Case Against God" by George H. Smith.

You read the bible and leaned on your own understanding. Had God been your guide then you would have clearly understood what is written. We are talking about ancient times that are no longer around in the old testament. Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecies but I guess if you are only going to look at one side then that will make you narrow minded.

The thing I don't get about how Jesus made the old testament inapplicable is that it's the SAME GOD.

The Bible is a bunch of made-up bronze age nonsense with no relevance today. I can't see how any rational person can find any truth in it.

I read it. I was very sad to see that I believed these lies for 20 years. Letting go of my faith was a struggle. But in the end I do not regret it.

No, I was already an atheist when I started to read it. Reading it just made me a *proud* atheist.
