Not only should you be worrying about the damage to your straightener, you should be worried about the total damage to your hair it is causing for you. Your are literally frying your hair by straightening it while it is still wet.
Have you ever heated up a skillet ans flicked water into it and head the "sizzle"? Well it sounds a lot like the noise the straightener makes when it goes over your wet hair doesn't it? Well its the same effect. It be completely fried.
Straightening your hair is damaging to begin with. But there are precautions you can take to get the less damage out of it. Wait until your hair completely dries, use a heat protectant, and wait until that heat protectant is definitely dry too and then go ahead and straighten your hair.

It may. It's not intended for wet hair. What it will damage is your hair. If you are trying to straighten wet hair, buy a wet/dry flat iron. It has channels to release the moisture from your hair.

I don't know about that, but it will certainly damage your hair. I'm sure you know that already, but I don't want to see any crying when your hair is broken half an inch from the root along your part so it looks like you have a tiny mohawk.
