    Terrible conditions faced by all

    Ready to die for the cause

    Every time the whistle blew

    Never a thought for to pause

    Companies rose to go over the top

    Heeding the sergeant's cry

    Whatever you do, don't retreat

    All will be lost if you fly

    Regulars, others and volunteers

    Flew at the enemy's lines

    Anyone failing would let down the rest

    Risking the guns and the mines

    Everyone died in the end.
