To say what exactly happened
is hard to say but the way it happened i was shocked no other driver did died in that wreck
with cars going over the top each other and flying sideways
he may of even be severely injured in the neck area
Indy cars have no roll over protection and are driving at a very high rate of speed and very close together and any mistake can cause a bad wreck
his car hit the fence at an angle that would break or snap a neck
as a fan of racing this is a great loss to the racing community
racing has lost a great competitor and friend
RIP DAN

If you see the crash, he was launched into the air inside a fireball - that would explain it.
RIP Dan, regards to the Wheldon family

Head injuries. Roll bar gave up when car did hit fence and while his helmet probably stayed intact the hit was hard enough to cause fatal skull and brain damage.
Better fence, roll bar or fully covered cockpit might have been saved his life

his car went into a catchfence that is just that..a chain-length reinforced fence,. cockpit first in a car where the drivers head is one of the highest parts of the car at almost 200 MPH

Officially, head injuries.
But I daresay, had his head survived intact, he would have been in major trouble with the rest of his body.
There are just some things the human body cannot withstand.

I read this morning that an autopsy is going to be done today. RIP Dan and prayers to his family.

I hate to write this down as I was a fan of his but it was probably severe brain damage, blood loss and he was most likely crushed under that crash.

It is a shame he has become famous posthumously.
The phrase "coming to a dead stop" is literal and in this case accurate.
Car design with the G forces and (lack of) safety equipment will do the job.
