Actually, in some cases, they are one and the same. There are reports in the local media of protesters stealing from each other as people sleep.

Thieves actually have the drive and ambition to steal things for themselves. The OWS crowd wants the government to steal for them.

Thieves try not to appear on the news.

Most thieves shower, and they use toilets (instead of cop cars) to go to the bathroom in.

OWS mobs are not so much thieves as extortionists.
