I made a beat and a popular artist used it without my permission?

My man and I have a home studio and we work hard to make our music. A week ago we found out that a famous rapper used it without our permission, they made a video and everything. what's the next thing we should do. I'm hurt because it takes a lot to make the instrumentals we make and we should received our credit and get paid for our part. We are a family that works closely together.

Firstly you have to be able to prove that you made the beat before this other person did. You can either have a dated recording (if you uploaded it to youtube or any other kind of media sharing site then the date of the upload will be there) or you can have recorded delivery. Then you will have to go to a solicitor that deals with copyright infingement and put forward your case. It there is a case to put forward then it will be taken to tribunal and you may be able to sue the artist who used the beat. You will not however be able to stop them using it anymore though but you will be able to claim royalites every time it it used.

Be careful though. If this is just a single track beat ten you may not be able to claim. If the beat is different in any way, even slightly, then you will most likely lose the case. Also you will have to make sure that the beat has not been used before in any other older songs because beats are reused all the time and changed only ever so slightly (this may just even be eq setting changes).

You have to be able to prove you made the beat first before he did, then you can sue him.
