How do i get files from a Windows Vista computer to a Windows 7 one?
Basically, my Windows Vista computer's screen got broken (it's a laptop) but i want to get the files from that computer on to another one. The other computer happens to be Windows 7 and i just can't work it out. For the record, the other computer still turns on fine and i can still see the upper left hand corner of the screen, but not much.
Don't suggest hard drive transplants or putting the files onto some sort of removable media; these ideas won't work for various reasons.
Thanks for your help :)

just borrow a friends monitor, hook it to your laptop, connect both of your computers together with a network cable, turn on files and printer sharing on both of them, share full drives(like C,D,E)and give your username(the one of vista that you are gona use in win7 to log on)full access to that share.move your files and you are done.

ummmmm plug a new screen in ??? and if its a laptop then plug in a VGA cable,,, like 99% of laptops have them ,,, then bam you have a screen ,,, then open up network shareing and then on your windows 7 pc , go to my computer then to network then wait till it loads and you will see the name of the vista computer then double click it and you should have access to its files,,,,
OR if none of this is possible then remote into it, the screen is not nessary for then ,,, on your win 7 machine go to start > type in mstsc and then hit enter then you will either enter the IP address of the vista pc or the visco computers name ,, and you will remote into it and have full acces to thes files where then you can out it on some sort of media or open file shareing ...

If the laptop has a connector for an external screen, you could plug one in and use the laptop to transfer the files. But transplanting the drive will work quicker and easier.

How about connect both computer via wireless system and you can easily transfer the files through internet/wireless LAN connection.
The easiest way actually is use another computer as remote access, so you can access the files on your "broken" computer via remote computer and transfer it easily without any removable media.
This way you need remote access software and internet connection, the only problem is you need to install it on both computer, I am not sure if you can install it on your "broken" computer, but this way might help. For more info about remote access software, you can visit link below

Attach and external display on old laptop.
Use a migration program to move files via a usb or network cable.
But if it's a program it would have to be installed from that programs installation CD.

I'd say you should just contact a professional, and not just listen to answers on the internet. You can't always trust the internet, ya know!

1. Plug in a monitor.
2. If laptop lacks video sockets, just put the hard disk in an external housing. no need for complicated file transfers.

Then your stuck because those are the only ways you can transfer files.
Maybe explaining the reasons may help.

"Files" can be moved
"Programs" or "applications" cannot.
you could connect the broken notebook to an external monitor...
