For me, Canon. Better warranty support and larger range of lens options as well as superior technology inside the camera. Get a 5D Mark II if you can afford it. Buy a few full frame L series lenses like the 50mm or 85mm f2.4 and a nice L series zoom with at least a 2.8 or faster f stop. This setup will cost a bit more but is still less than half the price of Canon's flag ship line with the exactly identical image quality results and will last you for years and you will not limit yourself as your skills improve in the future. Plus pros will respect you for making an informed and sensible purchase. A fun lens is the 15mm 2.8 which can be bought for $350. Then convert the fish eye into a rectilinear image with Adobe Lightroom software from RAW. You will never have more fun capturing the world with the sharpest edge to edge detail that money can buy. Yes even sharper than the more expensive Canon L 14mm which costs $2800. This is the best secret inside the DSLR camera world today.

    Update:

It looks like there are a lot of bitter people in this forum. It just goes to show that one can only be as honest as one can be but it will do nothing more than force other people's ignorance and rage to the surface. Come on guys. Its just photography. Its not like we are saving lives or fixing the world in here.

    Which brand is better?

This question is asked here about two dozen times each and every single day. But, of course your question is different and in these busy times who has the time to search and read, right?

There seems to be a deeply seated believe that any brand for DSLR cameras is better and that a beginner will need the best camera.

    Both are not true.

If you are just starting out with photography there is no way you will be better than the camera. That takes dedication, willingness to learn by reading about theory and getting honest criticism on your work. Add to that the fact that quality and performance differences between the various entry level models are very, very small and you are indeed facing a difficult choice.

So, which one to buy then?

That really comes down to your personal preference. Pick up any recent DSLR, a Nikon D3100, a Canon T3i or a Pentax K-r or K-x and see which one feels best. Select one that feels good in your hands and allows you to adjust shutter speed, aperture and autofocus point easily. If you have a friend or family member that also owns a DSLR and is willing to let you borrow lenses then consider going for the same brand.

Buy a memory card, an 8gb class 6 is fine, brand doesn't really matter. A microfiber cloth, a rocket blower and some sort of protective bag. Take it home, plug in the battery charger and start reading the manual while your battery charges.

Now, go out there and shoot! Practice! Review your work and practice some more.

Come on, don't you think if Canon was better than Nikon you would already know that, and everyone else would. There are tens of same questions here everyday, and these brands are the same when it comes to quality and sharpness.

It's not like Canon has nicer red color, but unfortunately bites you when you pull out the memory card. All DSLRs today are great.

    Canon EOS T3, T2i, T3i, Nikon D3100, D5100 and Pentax K-r would be the best below $900.

You have started a flame war. Anything they say ie. Canon was better colour and sharpness is just because they spent a lot of money on a brand and want to think it's the best but it's not. Nikon is great aswell try comparing 2 models not 2 brands. just don't buy a pentax, I don't trust them

& nikon has more lenses than canon (162 to 169) just goes to show you can't trust that other person

Canon just announched their 1DX top of the line, professional DSLR which might be the best between Canon and Nikon. It should be available mid march or so.

Nikon has yet to announce their D4 camera.

between Nikon and Canon, however, what really matters is your comfort level with either system. For entry level cameras, which I recommend you look at, look at which one has the features you want, at the price you want to pay, as well as which one is most comfortable to you.
