Is there any advice on a bad day at subbing?
I subbed today for a 4th grade classroom. We got through the day and completed all the assignments, but the kids were very chatty, and I didn't get strict until I heard someone wrote on a teacher's desk during recess. I also put one of the kids that fooled around right in front of the teacher's desk. Other than that, there weren't any problems. They were better in the afternoons than the morning. However...now I'm not sure if I did a good job and kept control! Any advice? Do you think I'll get another call? Thanks for any advice! =)

First of all, try not to over-think it when you get home. It'll make you crazy.
Next time, as soon as you walk into the classroom tell them your expectations. Then, if they don't follow you have a good excuse to be upset. If they get too chatty, tell them to stop being loud and threaten to take their speaking privileges away. Then, if they STILL don't listen: threaten them with a note to a teacher. I know my teachers got REALLY upset when they got a bad report from the sub.
Always worked ;).
If they think its an empty threat, actually do it. Write a note to the teacher and have her/him deal with it.

You'll get another call. It's very difficult to find people willing to substitute teach.
I sub for 11th and 12th graders, which can be a nightmare. Some respect you, some don't.
Another poster mentioned that students don't respect subs, but that is not always true. I have seen classes that respected subs much more than the actual teacher.
The dynamics of each class (subject taught, how strict the teacher is, etc.) can affect how students view subs.
If you aren't sure whether you did a bad job, when you sub again ask the director (dean, principal, administrator, whoever!) to look into your classoom a couple of times during the day.
The last time I subbed, I let a girl use a curling iron in the classroom and the director walked in. Busted!

When there's a sub teacher, students lose all respect for the person teaching the class. Everything the sub says doesn't matter to them because your not their teacher. Xx
