What is your definition of evil, and why?

What constitutes evil?

Is there a discrepancy between evil defined as something that harms others, and the christian concept of evil as being not aligned with god?

Which do you think is the most accurate description of evil? Something which harms others? Or something that contradicts the bible?

I'm an atheist. I'm just interested in how christianity can interpret some things as evil when in reality they are incredibly benign, (like homosexuality) and at the same time interpret other things as not evil (god condemning unbelieving humanity to hell).

Are things 'evil' just because the bible says they are, or because they cause harm to others?

What's your personal interpretation of evil?

Oh, and on another note, it's after 2pm in Australia and the rapture still hasn't happened, in case anyone was wondering.

Update:

Scrubbag, just wondering... How can there be an 'absence' of god if the bible says god is omnipresent?

If you go about harming others with words or action not caring then i think that is a form of evil.

You have the power to decide,if you do good or bad. The power and quality of your own thoughts will decide the path.

There are things that cannot be on there own, but need something else to be taken away before they can be.

Darkness is one of these things.....Darkness cannot be "made"...there is no "dark" switch someone can just flip on. Darkness is the ABSENCE of Light... that is all.

Evil is another one of these things... Evil cannot be "made", it is the ABSENCE of Good...that is all.

Without God, there remains....Evil. When God is removed from a place, evil then dwells.

Not all bad things are evil, for to be evil, it must be totally against God's goodness. Even people like Hitler were not evil, they were mislead by their environment and their teachers, and so they became some poor misguided fools, who did bad things...but they were NOT evil.

Only the devil and his demons are evil...so corrupt, that they go against anything that is Godly.

Don't get me wrong... I am not saying Atheists are evil, they just do not believe in God... but those who KNOW God exists and still go against him, are the evil ones.

And as for rapture, I don't like rap music, so I don't listen to it....lol.

That which results in pain, sorrow, or distress. In order to convey the correct thought in English, the very comprehensive Hebrew word raʽ is variously translated as “bad,” “gloomy,” “ugly,” “evil,” “calamitous,” “malignant,” “ungenerous,” and “envious,” depending upon the context. (Ge 2:9; 40:7; 41:3; Ex 33:4; De 6:22; 28:35; Pr 23:6; 28:22) The Greek word ka‧kos′ may be defined as that which is (1) morally evil and (2) destructive; among the ways it has been translated are: “bad,” “evil,” “hurtful,” “injurious,” “wrong.” (Ro 7:19; 12:17; Col 3:5; Tit 1:12; Heb 5:14) The Hebrew verb qa‧lal′ means “call down evil upon.

Well evil is anything that goes against Gods commandments. Christians believe that the bible is inspired by God, therefore it tells us what God deems as evil. The bible is our highest authority, not society and what it considers "benign." Because in reality, what may seem harmless may actually harmful. God is not a killjoy. He's looking out for us.

    By theology:

How can we explain God's character? He is “good” He defines goodness, love and truth—all that is right. And just as a person's character is defined by what he rejects as much as by what he accepts as right, so God also defines that which is evil and therefore to be rejected. Among other characteristics, the way of evil consists of selfishness, hostility, hatred and lies. It is the opposite of all that God stands for and is. God's character runs completely counter to the way of evil. And this fundamental differentiation between good and evil, embodied within the character of God Himself—both that which is His character and that which He has rejected—existed from the very beginning. We may grope for the exact terminology to describe this spiritual reality, but in essence, by defining that which is good, we also define the opposite way of evil.

Something that is evil is something like... the Devil, or your inner demons. Something that is truly corrupt.
