How Long Should A Laptop Last?

I bought a Dell Inspiron, it broke in six months and kept breaking. Other laptops lasted me a max of three years.

My 14 year old brother still has his Dell Inspiron from 4 years ago. He uses it a lot for youtube and researching movies. My sister's from a few years ago just broke. It had viruses. I had another Dell that I literally had on 24/7 that lasted 5 whole years before the battery was shot. I could have replaced it too.

What do you mean by breaking? Like, literally? Parts falling off or screen breaking? The geek squad came out to fix my brother's and sister's a few times to repair things. My dad got the warranty for them so it was free. Then my brother's was attacked by a virus and they fixed it over the phone for a little over a hundred dollars.

Hummmmmmmmm I have a dell Inspiron too, I had to change the hard drive once but that was under warranty (in like the 3rd month) it was just a faulty HD. Is ur comp still under warranty? May be u got a faulty laptop.... U may be able to ask for a new computer....especially if all those break downs were documented under the warranty

It's 2 yr old now, no problems of any sort

It depends on the laptop and who made it.

Specifically, they don't make Dells they way they used to.

Now that they are popular, the quality has gone downhill and people still buy them based on the original good reputation they developed.

If it's only been 6 months, it's under warranty, right?

The problem is, getting a proper response from the warranty authorization guys is like pulling teeth.

That said, the motherboard in my wife's Dell 9200 was replaced 3 or 4 times (all under warranty) before we were no longer able to extend the warranty anymore.

My previous laptop lasted 8 years, it still works but the screen has started to separate from its' connectors leaving lines down the screen. I have many customers who have run the same machine for similar times. In fact most of them only replace theirs when their system no longer supports the latest software. But if you move them a lot when running, and if you pick them up, turn round carrying them, or put them down too fast, the drives are subject to impact damage from the heads hitting the platters. Also any impact can crack the motherboard, break soldered connections on micro-components or even crack those components. Placing them on soft materials like bedding, carpets or tablecloths will restrict air flow causing continuous overheating, this will eventually destroy the cpu.

I have an old Asus laptop that I got about 7-8 years ago. Its a Pentium 4 3GHz. I haven't exactly treated it with care either. Still works OK, doesn't look pretty anymore though! It really depends more on luck than anything else!

If you take care of them, hardware should easily last 3-6 years, maybe more. If you don't take care of them, anywhere from 0 - 2 years.

4-5 years if your rough with it about 7 if your careful mine is starting to have probs and im going to save up for a new one but i hope it lasts a good year or two more

Well 3 years sound s fine to me, but if you brought a computer (desktop) that would probably last you 10years if you by them now, because I brought a new all in one touch screen computer and the grantee on it is 10years which is good. Thank, Kade
