2000 Craftsman LTX riding mower with a 17hp Kohler Motor model 917-272480?
I own a Craftsman riding lawn mower with a Kohler motor and recently while mowing my yard it just stopped running. No noises, no smoke just stopped running.
So after I checked the mower over I noticed that on the bottom of the carburetor bowl is a device called "Fuel Solenoid" it also has a wire coming out of it that runs into the main harness so it is obviously electrically powered. Anyways, I noticed gas was leaking from the solenoid and did not stop until the gas tank emptied out all the gas.
So, I went online to Sears parts direct and bought a new fuel solenoid, fuel filter and air filter and bought a new battery from walmart and I also checked and cleaned the gas cap to make sure the breather hole was not clogged. Installed the items and the mower started up and ran and I thought cool I fixed it.
one note about old solenoid, when I removed it to install the new one, the plunger on the old part would not move, the plunger on the new part moved up and down freely when I pressed on it. So I figured for sure the old part was surely bad and also the fact it leaked gas also.
So, I drove it around my yard for about 5 mins, when all of sudden it just stopped running as if it ran out of gas, But I filled the tank half way. So I checked everything again and noticed the new solenoid was very very very hot to touch but it was not leaking gas like the old one did before.
I tried to start the mower again but when I turn the key all it did was spin the motor over but did not start???
Need to hear from people with small engine repair knowledge and or Craftsman owners that may of had same problem and what was need to fix it.
Well, I contacted Sears and they are sending out another solenoid under the assumption that the new part failed and is defective. I am going to install replacement part approx Wed or Thurs and will update question the next day.
My main concern was that the new part worked but the engine stopped running after 5 ins and the new part was extreamly hot to the touch and after removing and checking the new solenoid the plunger would not move freely anymore and actaully would get stuck when i pushed it all the way down.
I do not know if that means the part just failed? or is something else causing it to stay engaged and causing it to get to hot and internally fail??? guess I'll find out after I install the replacement part.
I installed the replacement solenoid and everything is fine. cranked up and ran for 5-10 mins, turn off and started 3-4 more times...the solenoid only got luke warm.

You have yet another bad solenoid. Yeah, it happens sometimes. They should replace the bad with a new one. The reason you had a leak with the old solenoid was coincidence. You had a bad seal ring and, I suspect a little dirt on the needle, and, when you took it all apart you freed the dirt or grit that was stopping the needle from seating, thus fuel would not stop flowing when the bowl was full.

I had the same problem with my kohler motor...take off the carb and clean it all the way through...then check your magneto gap with a feeler gauge at 16,000th of an inch...change the spark plug...it should start and run...if not there is a small round black thing where several of your fuel lines come together by the fuel filter...i forget what its called but it can go bad and that may be causing your problem...its about $20.00 for a new one

I would take it in because it sounds like the relay on the solenoid, or the connection before that is failing, because its telling it to stay wide open all the time, having gas go through, then it stayed like that getting old gas or gunk build up keeping it wide-open, getting it stuck.

I agree with Malky, the solenoid should not get hot. They do get warm but not hot. Just because the part is new doesn't mean it is good. It just means you are the first one to use it.
