25 years in auto industry, I have worked in aftermarket parts world as a store manager (ie, cheif auto parts, AutoZone and PepBoys) but mainly in the new car dealerships as a parts counterman to the techs and wholesale customers.

  • AC Condenser Fan Motor and capacitor question. Need AC tech to answer.?

My outside condenser is approx. 16 yrs old. I had the fan motor replaced 2-3 years ago with an AO Smith motor approx. $150 and a capacitor for the motor and also the compressor just to be sure. It has worked fine since.

The other day I was home and the AC kicked on then after a few minutes I realized it wasn't getting cold so I looked outside and the fan motor was not running. So, I turned off AC and then flipped the breaker.

Waited approx. 5 mins after looking over outside unit for signs of a major issue but did not see anything out of place.

Turned AC back on and it worked fine and has worked since then approx. 3 days.

Is this a hiccup or a sign the motor may be going out since it maybe a cheap replacement or maybe the capacitor is failing?

What does the symptom I described lead towards? the motor or the capacitor? The motor makes no odd noises.

    Thanks Jeff

  • Attn: Chevy/GM Experts Or if you own a 1998 Chevy K1500 w/350?

    I bought and now own a 1998 Chevy K1500 with a 5.7L 350 and A/T with 192,000 miles from my friend.

Per my friend recent maintenance performed spark plugs about 5,000 miles ago and wires about 1,000 miles ago and also fuel pressure regulator replaced about 2,000 miles ago. beside that my friend stated the fuel pump and fuel filter was replace 3-4 years ago. He bought the truck from a dealer in 2006 with 130,000 miles on it so he put 62,000 miles on it in 4-5 years.

I know my friend took really good care of the truck, he drives a company truck mostly and use to only drive the truck approx 1-2 times a week. he had an extended crank issue and there for thought it was just because it was sitting all week but then he finally took it to a garage and they replaced the fuel pressure regulator.

When I bought it from him 2 months ago it started and ran good. I let it sit a week and I had a hard time getting it to start. I tested the fuel pressure with gauge at rail and got 60-65psi and I tested spark with spark tester at plug and have spark, I also cleaned the throttle body because it looked real dirty with berry-mans B-12chem-tooll. I finally got it to start after multiply long cranking and after that I drove it 2 times a week for about a month and also started it in the drive way the other days to keep it on a daily schedule of starting.

However, I got busy about a week ago and let it sit, now I cannot get it to start. I actually burned up my starter trying to get it to start. I thought it was like the last time it was stubborn but I thought it would finally start. I replaced the starter and tried to start again...nothen, engine just spins over, no noises, no sounds like it wants to start...nothen

So, I tested fuel again and spark again and I have both....can't figure out what the heck is wrong!!!!

need to hear from GM/Chevy experts or anyone that may of had or have same issues.

    thanks

  • 2000 Craftsman LTX riding mower with a 17hp Kohler Motor model 917-272480?

I own a Craftsman riding lawn mower with a Kohler motor and recently while mowing my yard it just stopped running. No noises, no smoke just stopped running.

So after I checked the mower over I noticed that on the bottom of the carburetor bowl is a device called "Fuel Solenoid" it also has a wire coming out of it that runs into the main harness so it is obviously electrically powered. Anyways, I noticed gas was leaking from the solenoid and did not stop until the gas tank emptied out all the gas.

So, I went online to Sears parts direct and bought a new fuel solenoid, fuel filter and air filter and bought a new battery from walmart and I also checked and cleaned the gas cap to make sure the breather hole was not clogged. Installed the items and the mower started up and ran and I thought cool I fixed it.

one note about old solenoid, when I removed it to install the new one, the plunger on the old part would not move, the plunger on the new part moved up and down freely when I pressed on it. So I figured for sure the old part was surely bad and also the fact it leaked gas also.

So, I drove it around my yard for about 5 mins, when all of sudden it just stopped running as if it ran out of gas, But I filled the tank half way. So I checked everything again and noticed the new solenoid was very very very hot to touch but it was not leaking gas like the old one did before.

I tried to start the mower again but when I turn the key all it did was spin the motor over but did not start???

Need to hear from people with small engine repair knowledge and or Craftsman owners that may of had same problem and what was need to fix it.

  • Craftsman lawn tractor with Kohler 17hp motor?

I own a craftsman lawn tractor 42" cut with a Kohler 17hp motor. Yes it is old but well maintained. yesterday while mowing my yard the motor just stopped running. No odd noise, no smoke, no knocking or anything. It did make a sound like running out of gas just before shutting off but my tank is 3/4 full. Also before the season started I changed spark plug, air filter and oil, (I can't recall when I changed the fuel filter and or if that could cause a restriction to stop motor from running.) Also I had just filled it up with gas before mowing and got about half of my property mowed. My property is 3/4 of an acre and this lawn tractor has handled it all these years with no issues.

If there is a Craftsman or small engine tech out there that could point me in the right direction of what to check, ie.. magneto? coil? or something minor or cheap to try before I load and haul to a repair center would be appreciated.

please do not reply unless your a small engine tech or Craftsman tech. thanks

2 days ago - 6 days left to answer.

    Additional Details

all answers so far sound like good advice, will look at mower Wednesday night and choose a best answer depending on which one was the most accurate

ok, I looked at the mower last night and found that on the bottom of the bowl on carb, there is a cylinder shaped part attached to the center/bottom of bowl and has one wire coming out of it, and it is leaking fuel. So I am thinking somehow that means the carb if it has a float is stuck??? let me know what you experts think

  • Kenmore Cold Spot Refrigerator?

my refrigerator is a Kenmore Cold Spot Model# 106.9751714 prod date is 11/96. It starting making a clunk, clunk, clunk noise every couple hours. I think the time frame is when the compressor runs then shut off. I am not a repair man but I think it is the compressor going bad.

Can anyone with refrig repair experience help me out or confirm what I think? I know it is hard to diag over a message but if the noise itself is common then a repair person should know and be able to point me in the right direction.

    Thanks
