Kenmore Cold Spot Refrigerator?

my refrigerator is a Kenmore Cold Spot Model# 106.9751714 prod date is 11/96. It starting making a clunk, clunk, clunk noise every couple hours. I think the time frame is when the compressor runs then shut off. I am not a repair man but I think it is the compressor going bad.

Can anyone with refrig repair experience help me out or confirm what I think? I know it is hard to diag over a message but if the noise itself is common then a repair person should know and be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Update:

I removed the front plastic white guard and the rear lower metal cover and cleaned and vacuumed the dust and dirt. I try to do it every year but I will admit I think I missed 2009.

But the frig is working just the clunk clunk clunk noise every so often.

Update 2:

I never heard the noise before about 2 weeks ago. I did the cleaning about 3-4 days ago.

Since the noise is new and started recently does that mean my compressor is going bad? Or are you saying the noise is normal even though I never heard it prior to now???

Update 3:

All 3 answers are great and does help me and lead me in the right direction, thanks for all the answers...

Jeff

compressor has a weak or broken spring inside, the compressor motor is sitting on 4 springs, inside compressor ,-- whenever compressor shut off or starts motor jerks and hit the inside of compressor, i've seen compressor run for years making this noise, but it bothers people to where the replace compressor or buy new unit, noise isnt so bad in the day time, but it get loud in the still of the night

Please check the body of the compressor Is it getting hot from normal condition ,generally it should be warm. it seems its a quite old 1996 ,already 14 years. The life span in reaching , this way your power bill also gets hike, as it takes more load. at the time of start and at closing time the sound will come.Once it starts there will not be noise . it runs in the grove. Also check any loose metallic /plastic is touching the compressor some times this also create some noise I suggest better call the right person and replace with new one, provided other things are ok. or if it is covered under Home appliances insurance, then report the matter to them. By doing this your power bill get reduced, free from noise &worry

First, remove the bottom front cover and check to see if your condenser coil is clogged with dirt and lint. If so use a vacuum or even a toilet works well to clean the coils. If the compressor gets hot it will have a hard time starting and cooling. The only time you should hear this noise is when the refrigerator is satisfied or when it goes into defrost cycle. Hopefully this solves your problem
