Is it illegal to walk on the roof of a public facility?

A few of my friends and I found a way to get on top of the metal walkway cover-thing that branches off of the inaccessible roof of the local train station. By making a few simple jumps and climbing a bit, we could easily do whatever we wanted on the wide, flat space. However, it struck me that this may not be legal. Is it?

If it helps, I live in New York.

It is not legal. Anytime you have to go past a lock or have to gain access to a property in a manner other than walking thru a standard gate or door, you are there in a manner not consistent with legal access. Now, if there was a stair case going up to the roof with no locks on the door and no chains on the gate and you could just walk up the stairs and get to the roof, then that would be OK as that is a standard means of access and they did not lock it.

Haha, I'd have to guess it would be illegal.
