Restoring a fiberglass shovel handle?

I have a shovel with a fiberglass handle and it's to a point that if you don't use gloves you'll have fiber glass fibers in you hand. Is there a way to restore the handle to prevent this sort of thing from happening? Besides replacing the handle.

Ouch! I work for a hardware store and have really never known of a way to preserve a fiberglass handle besides wrapping duct tape all the way around it-not that great of an idea. Handles are out of sight pricewise and quite honestly, by the time you try to replace the handle, you can usually spend $10.00 to $12.00 more for a new shovel.
