How can I convert .wps files to use on Windows 7? I have used MicroSoft window since 1998, with Windows 98,?

Windows 98B, Windows ME, and now Windows Vista. But, my new laptop uses Windows 7 and it will not open the MicroSoft Word Processor files with the .wps extension. If I convert all of the files to Wordpad, they can be read, but all formatting, etc., is lost, special characters, and color.

So, is there a way to open the .wps files? Is there a "free way" to open .wps files?

Thank you.

Update:

I forgot a very important detail: I need something that I can edit. Wordpad allows editing, but loses too much. I cannot edit any of M/S Office stuff, such as 2010

Update 2:

The Windows 7 did not come with any word processing software in full version. It will open Adobe Reader, Word 2007, 2010, etc., but I cannot edit or save anything. I took the .wps document and saved it as works template .wpt, .txt (notepad), .htm, webpage HTML only, web archive mht, word 97-2003 doc, .rtf, and .docx (2007 word). The laptop with Windows Vista can edit the .wps and .txt; it opens the others, but no editing/saving. The laptop with Windows Vista opens all except .wps and .wpt. The only one I can edit is .txt (no color, loses formatting, etc.)

Is there any program out there that I can use to convert the .wps documents that I can download for free? Bill Gates company is really getting to be too much; they charge too much, and now no free software when I buy a new computer!

Thanks !!!!

WPS is the default extension for Microsoft Works word processor. To open them, in the open file box, select Word 2000 or All file types and try again.

Alternatively you can try the "Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter" application.
