Why are hospitals/clinics suddenly charging twice for the same service?
I've recently had several MRIs and CT scans and am all of the sudden being charged two separate copays. As recent as last year, I had an MRI and was only charged one copay ... now I'm being told that since March 2011, patients can be charged one copay for the procedure and another copay for the radiologist to read the results.
I've had MANY scans in my life (CTs and MRIs of my brain, knee, and abdomen) and have never been charged two copays. What the heck happened in March to cause this (since everyone is saying this change happened in March)? Does anyone know? Seems like a rip-off ... no one is going to have a scan and then not have it read by a radiologist ... should be all-in-one.
Called the insurance already. They say this is legit.

It's all about your insurance coverage. If the plan changed, to allow copayments every step of the way, that's how it is.
It's not the hospital/clinic - it's your insurance plan.

I don't really know if this is a state to state charge but it's been this way in mine for a long time. Hospitals say there losing money because out patient surgery's are the think now. So they have to do something to make more money. And also insurance companies set the guild ling on how test surgery if you need it how many days you can stay. A Friend of mine had open heart surgery, and was sent home in three days. I was very surprised, cheaper to send him home with home health care then stay in the hospital.
Yes it is legit.

Obviously your insurance changed its policy. If they say it's legit, then that's that.
I've been on the same PPO insurance plan for 10 years and I've always been charged two separate copays -- one for the procedure, and one for the radiologist. The scan or xray is billed by the hospital, the radiologist bills separately.

Hospitals and clinics are not charging twice. Rather, the MRI center charges for its portion of the service provided, and the radiologist charges separately for his portion of services provided. That means you get two co-pays, since you had two separate services provided. This is similar to having a surgery procedure performed in a hospital. You get one bill from the hospital and another from the attending surgeon, and you are faced with two co-pays. Frankly, you are fortunate that you had only one co-pay in the past.
