A few questions on Skyrim?

I've never played an Elder Scrolls game before, but because of all the hype about Skyrim, I decided to check this one out, and it seems exactly like the kind of game I could really get into. So if you please, I have a few questions.

Is there any sort of over-arching plot of the game, or is it solely a free-roaming, do-whatever-you-want type of deal?

Is there any plot from previous games that I should know before playing this one?

Can someone explain the different races you can choose? Do they have any effect on your character other than in appearance?

Hey, im a huge elder scrolls fan and have been playing since TES III: Morrwind!

First off, there is a main story/plot to the game, although you do not need to play the previous Elder Scrolls games to understand it, playing the previous games does help to understand the lore of the elder scrolls. Skyrim is set 200 years after oblivion, and begins with your character as an unknown prisoner, on the way to their own execution, however you manage to escape. The player eventually learns that Skyrim's civil war is last in a sequence of prophetic events foretold by the 'Elder Scrolls', which foretell of the return of 'Alduin'(the Nordic god of destruction, who takes the form of a gigantic dragon). Alduin is prophesied to consume the world with his servants, the Jills (a race of black dragons). Your character is the last Dovahkiin (Dragonborn), a dragon hunter anointed by the gods to help fend off the threat Alduin poses to Skyrim and Tamriel. This is the main story/plot to Skyrim, however as it is with every Elder Scrolls game you do not have to play through the main quest at all, you are completely free to forget about it and just 'free roam'.

Apart from the physical differences of the races, each race also gains special powers and different base stats. For example the Khajiit (cat-like race) have the power of 'Night-Eye' a spell which allow you to see in the dark, and the Argonian race has the ability to breathe underwater. Heres a complete list of the special abilities:

    - ORCS: Beserker

    - REDGUARDS: Adrenaline Rush

    - WOOD ELF: Resist poison, resist disease, command animals

    - NORD: Battlecry

    - KHAJIIT: Night-eye, claw attacks

    - IMPERIAL: Voice of the Emperor, find more coins when looting

    - HIGH ELF: Regenerate Magicka more quickly

    - DARK ELF: Ancestor’s Wrath (surround self in fire), resist fire

    - BRETON: Dragonskin (absorb spells), resist shock

    - ARGONIANS: Histskin (regenerate health quickly), resist disease, breathe underwater

Each race also starts off with different stats, here is a link to what each race starts off with:

Hopefully all this info helps you understand more about skyrim (:

There is a main quest in Skyrim which u can follow at your leisure (or not at all). U can do various side quests instead...or just explore and roam the worldspace.

U don't need to know any of the story from previous games. Each Elder Scrolls game is stand-alone as far as gameplay goes. There is a back story that ties all the games together, but it's not needed at all for gameplay.

The races will have various characteristics that will affect your character. Argonians, for example, can breathe under water, while other races can't without a spell or enchantment.

I think u will like the game. It has been hyped a lot, but Bethesda's games have a good track record of being what they say they are. And they have been good.

I've never played an Elder Scrolls game either, but I've been told that I wouldn't need to play the others to understand Skyrim. I have also read that this game is "free-roam" so you can basically do what you want. You don't have to do the main plot if you don't want to. The different races that you can choose from depends on what abilities you want to have. Like, I read that if you want stealth to be one of your main abilities, there's a certain race that can really help you with that. But then again I'm not sure since I've never played it before. I suggest maybe reading some articles about it, that's what I did and I already have it pre-ordered.
