While "The Star-Spangled Banner" was not officially made the official national anthem of the United States of America until 1931, it was sung during the first game of the 1918 World Series and had been popular for years, so it's reasonable for it to be sung before a 1919 game.

Game 1 of the 1918 World Series marked the first time "The Star Spangled Banner" was performed at a major league game. During the seventh inning stretch, the band began playing the song due to the fact the country was involved in World War I. The song would be named the national anthem of the United States in 1931, and during World War II its playing would become a regular pregame feature of baseball games and other sporting events.

Looks like the info I copy/pasted is conflicting ... first one said it was sung and the second one said a band played ... maybe the band played and someone sang ... maybe the crowd sang to the band ... I don't know.

Carrie Underwood sang the national anthem on the All*celebrity sport. perhaps that's what your buddy develop into thinking. And, like different persons have reported, Bob Seger sang "united statesa. the alluring" which, in my view could desire to be our national anthem not that complicated-to-sing "celebrity Spangled Banner".. ask your self who St. Louis could have.
