The Intimate test is 'can others understand him'. However he's only three And a boy. There is no harm having an assessment done but my guess is that you will be asked to wait a little longer and if still concerned ask for referral again. ST waiting lists are long.

Most speech delays are caused by underlying ear problems. While it's not true some of the time, the number of children I have personally met with speech delays that then have hearingproblems have aastoundedme. My youngest has a speech delay and has had four sets of grommets. At the age of 3 she had such poor speech that we couldn't understand her. She received her first set of grommets when she was two. After speaking with her ENT specialist she confirmed that having a speech delay in small children went hand and hand with hearing issues. My daughter went to a speech therapist at 3. At 6 she is improving without the therapist as her ears have finally stopped being infected all the time! Anyways, she is doing great at school now. It's worth while having a hearing test done now as well as a speech therapist. The earlier he starts, the better the outcome!

You're definitely not the first person to ask this question, but it's important to catch speech and/or language problems early. You can talk with your school's speech therapist and get a free evaluation to make sure everything's ok. Most often kids that struggle with speech have hearing loss. It would be best to get it checked now so he can develop and learn normally.

my sisters son had speech therapy, although it didn't do much good him, and all the therapist said was read more books to him :-S which was a load of rubbish advice how ever as time went on he learnt to talk by himself, you shouldn't feel like its your own at all, however as a mother myself i know its hard not to blame yourself when something happens.
right now he is doing fine i cant believe how well he talks now, sometimes i think kids need a little time to work things out for them self.
