Where was the hamburger invented?
Because at last nights World Series game between St. Louis and Texas, they said it was invented in Texas.
I find it weird because most of the best burgers come from the East coast (White castle) or the West Coast (In N Out).
And what did we eat before Texas became part of the Union? Tea & crumpets?

Americans didn't invent the idea of placing meat between two pieces of bread. In Europe and Asia there are many reports of such a fast meal being mentioned in writing. The Earl of Sandwich is the one that gets credited of having invented the sandwich. Yet the French claim that they came up with the idea first.
The fact is, bread has been part of practically every human diet. So has meat. Thus its almost impossible to give credit to any culture as to who came up with the idea first. Since bread and meat are so common.
However, the hambuger as we know it today, probably was invented in America. The problem is that no one knows for sure where it happened. Nobody bothered to record the event.
It's like asking "who invented the Taco". Some say the Conquistadores that invaded Mexico did. Yet other historians point out that the natives would eat tacos not only made out of meat, but also of insects like grasshoppers and other bugs. Yet there is no specific date when it first happened or what person invented the first taco.
So is with the hamburger.

The hamburger had its beginning on Athens' interesting courthouse square in the l880s when Fletcher Davis, who owned a downtown cafe, invented the sandwich. The delicacy was so popular that in l904 a group of Athens businessmen raised enough money to send the inventor to the St. Louis World's Fair, where the hamburger was introduced to the world.

Apparently, there are quite a few people/businesses who claim they invented the hamburger lol. That's an interesting question, though.
