If a Synthroid pill is crushed before being taken is it still very important to drink a full glass of water?

My grandmother is almost 91. She had a stroke last year and spent a year in a nursing facility. We brought her home last week and the doctor told us that she should take Synthroid but because of the stroke she has extreme difficulty swallowing and needs thickened liquid a half teaspoon at a time

Since I am not sure how your grandma's physician told you to crush and administer the medications, this is just general information I am providing. I would encourage you to follow up with your grandmother's physician!!

The National Library of Medicine indicates the following: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a...

The reason for needing to drink a full glass of water with a tablet is because the pill can get stuck in the throat or cause gagging. You should definitely make sure you all watch her closely as you give your grandma the crushed synthroid pill. Since she is on thickened liquids with extreme swallowing problems, if it takes her a long time to swallow, please let the physician know. This may cause her to aspirate since she has extreme problems swallowing. Definitely consult with your grandmother's physician!
