Pain in arms, wrists, and numbness in hands when sleeping... Any thoughts?

For the last couple of years, I thought I had Carpal Tunnel; my hands go numb/get tingly during the night and often during the day.

For the last few months, I've been awakened at night with the symptoms above, but now there's tremendous pain in my arms, I can't move my hands, they're tingly and numb, and have to 'shake them out' to get them to be able to even move or close my fingers. It is getting worse and worse and I my GP doesn't seem to think I have carpal.

Any thoughts on what this may be? I work on computers for a living; have horses and have had them home for about 2 months so I've been mucking stalls, carrying bales of hay, lots of work I'm not used to. It's getting worse and worse and I'm getting afraid it may be something more serious.

Thank you for reading this and any advice/help you can give. Of course I know I'm going to need to see a doctor; what type of specialist deals with these types of symptoms. My GP is pretty much useless when it comes to this.

Thank you!.

Update:

Thank you for the 2 quick answers!

The problem happens nightly in BOTH arms & hands and is getting worse every day. You do have a good point, as I do have 3 herniated discs in my back & neck (the neck being the most recent).

Any additional answers are truly appreciated; but I will definitely ask my back dr. if this could be a by-product of those problems. Honestly, I am starting to get worried if this is some kind of disease like MD, MS, etc. (I'm not a hypochondriac, but I'm 45, am carrying a few extra pounds and do have a few health issues).

It's just getting so bad it wakes me up numerous times during the night and every morning it takes about10 minutes for the paid in my arms and numbness in my hands to go away and be to even be able to even open and close my hands.

Thank you again for any and all advice you can give! God Bless ;-)

See a Neurologist and have him check the nerves at the base of your neck. That is the area that controls the nerves in your arms and hands. You may have ruptured a disc or pinched some nerves in your neck from doing hard, heavy work, or even because of bad posture while working on the computers. Never try to diagnose your medical problems for a doctor especially carpal tunnel syndrome. Some doctors don't believe it exists while others have a 'you just have to live with it' attitude. It is a very real condition and a Neurologist can cure it.

I have the same problems and they are caused from nerves that are pinched as a result of broken vertebraes in my neck. They are fused together with a steel plate and can't be fixed. I can best describe the feelings in my hands as tingling and feel like they are covered with dry mud.

    Hope you get well soon.

    Arm Pain At Night

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/awNoM

If it's constantly there, it's probably a pinched nerve in your neck. Try stretching your neck to your right shoulder -- if you feel the neck muscles are tight, then stretching them should help your arm and hand. If I'm tense, or when I wake up in the morning, I frequently have left shoulder pain that radiates down my arm, associated with numbness. A heart problem was ruled out, and xrays of my neck showed some disc degeneration. I find that just dropping my head to my opposite shoulder, and then down to my chest, seems to help. If the numbness and tingling are intermittent, I'd check with a doc first to rule out anything potentially dangerous like your heart.

I have had the same problem for years now. it scared me so bad i went to a nurologist he said it is a oinched nerve and a herniated disc which can be eased with some physical therapy or perhaps in my case it was surgery I still have the problem and ive found that physical therapy helps alot.. along with sometimes sleeping in a foam neck brace to keep the bones off the nerve.
