Will a dog that won't walk up steps, get hungry enough to go up stairs?
I just adopted a 3 year old German Shepherd. The back of the house has 4 steps. He goes down fine, but refuses to come back up them. The couple who had him before had stairs that he went up and down but I think was only 2. I want to know if he gets hungry enough, will he come up the stairs? I don't want to seem cruel, just trying to set the guide lines that I think he should be able to do. Any suggestions?

Maybe it's not the stairs. It's what he's going into that scares him. Put yourself in the Dog's shoes. If every time you went up steps into a house, you got beat or scolded. Would you go up those stairs? I don't care what the former owners had to say. They got rid of him for a reason. Their word is crap.
If it takes hours and hours, that's what you have to do. You have to sit on the top of the stairs and get him to come to you. And you might have to do that a few times.
Dogs are very smart animals. Very smart.

yes, he will go up the stair when he is hungry enough, try giving him a treat and the only way he can get it if he goes up the stairs. i would want to figure out why he doesn't wait to climb up a 4 step stairs, maybe it really hard for him, my dog has trouble going down the stair and fell on his face, he's done the dozens of times, but now i think he learned that your not suppose to run down the stair you'll only fall.
