How important are high-end, brand-name microphones to musicians?
I'm starting a mobile recording business and trying to decide what microphones I'll want in my arsenal. I realize that high quality microphones will produce superior sound, but I will mostly be recording live performances on location, not in a studio. You can get great sound will more modestly priced microphones like MXL and Rode, but how important is the brand name of a microphone to artists and musicians. Will having a few Neumanns and AKG's in my stash attract more clients or a higher level of clientele? I'd love to hear opinions from musicians, engineers or anyone else in the know. Thanks!

Sadly, brand name microphones do make a difference. I would say most artists don't really know, so to them it's a safety net to see names they recognize. I have an awesome stereo pair of ADK's, and no one knows what they are so they scoff at them, even though they sound just like neumann u-67s (They should, they are hand made knock offs.) Even though these microphones have incredible sensitivity and mid-frequency warmth, a lot of people can't hear the difference and prefer to go with the name brands.
I'd go with the typical mic's you see in most studios, that way you are considered "current" and safe.
