Significant reduction in electric?

Since everyone here wants to significantly reduce electric consumption, why not start in your local town or city and have them turn off the street lights? These lights are on from dusk to dawn whether or not people are present. The reduction of electric this electric usage will:

Reduce taxes

Reduce demand on foreign oil

Reduce air pollution (from reduced electric production)

businesses are really a good start. but in your home, the new cfl light bulbs do help. i only converted the multiple light fixtures from 3 or 4 60 watts to 3 or 4 13 watt bulbs is significant. and by all means when it is light outside use the natural sunlight instead of elec.

Most urban lighting exists for public safety.

If you are truly concerned about the cost of the electric bill the municipality is paying- inform yourself on the new technologies here http://www.ledcity.com/ Present your information you have gathered from the site and other sites on that matter.

AS far as foreign oil is concerned- the media nad big oil are lying to you,as they have lied for generations. There is plenty of oil for a very long time, the problem is not supply- the problem is too few people control the production, refining and distribution of it. They are not going to go away, they are not going to run out of supply. If they were faced with that, you would have the next energy system in place very quickly and they would be the support infrastructure as they are now.

Air pollution in the US, with the exception of a handful of areas is not from pollution sourcesd within the US- Your text books minimize the fact that much of the pollution you are being instructed to be concerned about actually comes from developing countries like Mexico- where companies like GE can construct coal fired plants Mexico or Central America without the pollution controls required of US plants and connecting those plants into the US electrical grid..

Follow the money trail- do not accept the propaganda- however be aware of the propaganda so you can recite it in your classroom to ebsure a good grade- truth has no place in acedemia, it is all about agenda. Follow the money trail. Any scientist putting their name to a claim is often selling their soul for grant money for more "research" to keep them employed and roof over their head- they do not care about yours.

I would be all for it in small towns. But big cities have too many obstacles in them that are not well marked.however, more & more lighting is going LED which uses a fraction of the electricity of incandesant and produces no heat. We need more solar power . Air conditioners that heat water, coffee makers with vacuum carafes instead of heating elements. All restaurants should have to capture the heat from their central heat and air systems to make their hot water. Eleminate single pane windows entirely. Better insulation standards for new built houses. Better mechanism in showers to slow water flow while we shampoo our hair or soap up our bodies. All current products on the market are unrealistic or pathetic. People need to line dry clothes more. We need to transition to electric cars that have small recharge generators that are equiped with catalytic converters on them until technology advances on battery energy storage. And the list goes on.

    Mike,

You would see a very big increase in crime. It does cost a lot of money and most people don't realize how much the monthly cost is. As a past Mayor of a small town, I know from studies we made that the rise in crime is one key factor and the other one is that we need light in case of an emergency.

One thing I was thinking of, was to play all sports games in the day light. The cost of running lights at a football game will really shock you. Thanks for thinking of our future.
