When reading the census, they list an occupation as "cooper". What is this?

A cooper is someone who makes wooden staved vessels of a conical form, of greater length than breadth, bound together with hoops and possessing flat ends or heads. Examples of a cooper's work include but are not limited to casks, barrels, buckets, tubs, butter churns, hogsheads, firkins, tierces, rundlets, puncheons, pipes, tuns, butts, pins and breakers....A barrel is technically a measure of the size of a cask, so the term "barrel-maker" cannot be used synonymously with "cooper." ..............so a skilled man who would have served an apprenticeship.............

While researching through the censuses, I will find where an occupation is listed as cooper. What is this?

This census reference to cooper means that the person was a barrel maker

Cooper Hooper? A forge worker who fashions barrel metal rings for sliding over the barrel pieces so that when the metal is cool and shrinks the barrel remains watertight. He also fashions the wooden barrel shell from wood.

Cannot really add to this,

A cooper is a Barrel maker.

They would make barrels. Maybe if they worked on a farm it could mean they work with chickens.
