    Glad to help you on this one. In the 'select a WebBook' dropdown, have a look at the intro to php/mysql

    http://cybertrain.info/webbooks/main.htm

    Different schools, different rules. It's up to you to decide what you want from web design.

    Google 'chrome experiments' and check out what some can do with javascript.

    Hope that's food for thought!

    You don't really need php for "design". Is your focus actually design as in the front end visual layer or the backend nuts and bolts to make it work. In either case maybe check out ajax and asp.net c# if you intend to work on any Microsoft platforms.

    Those are pretty much enough. You can build a great website using those tools. One other thing that might be useful, though not necessary, is Flash. But since HTML5 will have built in properties for handling these things, Flash may soon become obsolete.

    FrontEnd --> Designs / HTML / CSS / JQUERY / JavaScript

    BackEnd --> PHP / MySQL / .Net / C# / Java / Ruby-on-Rails / ASP / SOAP / JSON / XML

    Adobe Photoshop for Web 2.0 Images

    Flash for animation and ActionScript..
