Cell phone for use in China?

I will be studying abroad in Beijing from January-May and need to figure out how to address the issue of a cell phone. I'm from the USA, my plan is with AT&T and my phone is a LG GU295. Is it possible to use my phone from home, but just put a Chinese SIM card in it so I avoid the international roaming charges? Or is it better to wait until I arrive to get a phone?  

Also, I will be traveling after my study abroad program ends to India, Thailand, and New Zealand. Would I have to get new phones for each of these places, or would it be enough to buy a new SIM card in each place?

The only 2 type of phones are GSM and CDMA. Most of the phones are GSM, now u can put any sim card in your GSM phone, but only a fixed brand sim on your CDMA phone. LG GU295 is a GSM phone so Chill. You can just keep on buying new SIM cards from each country.

Edit: And If you want then you can also buy new GSM phone from China under $10 so that you can use ur USA sim and also your Other countries sim card.

Edit 2: But your phone should be unlocked, if its locked to AT&T then no other carriers sim will work on it untill its unlocked.
