Moving to Manchester from London.?
At the moment I'm a homosexual living in London. I live in Chelsea, which is "supposed" to be one of the "nice" areas of this city, but I've received death threats and had abuse shouted at me in the street for being gay. I have relatives in Manchester and have been up there a few times in the last few weeks and REALLY love it, it's a great city and there's no homophobic pricks up there like we get down here in London. I'd like to move there, not to the city just yet just to the suburbs, my friends live in Prestwich which is a nice area, but I was looking more towards Whitefield or Swinton area, is this a good choice?

Despite what some people put on here; often people who do NOT know the city, it is a great place to live and very tolerant.
I moved up, with my ex from London, many years ago, and never ever regretted it. We parted but both stayed on. Visitors are amazed how we live and the quality of life we have here.
I lived in Prestwich, many years, and can vouch for the fact it and Whitefield are great suburbs and offer a much more affordable life than the over hyped Didsburys and Chorltons, to the south of the city. Swinton IS cheaper, but sound, with a great choice of property.
Prestwich & Whitefield have the METROLINK which, in a conurbation with the slowest moving traffic outside the SE, is a big, big bonus. Also on the M60, junction 17. Heaton Park on the doorstep.....etc!
The "new" other half and I have no kids, so moved further into town, because good schools not an issue, and we like to be able to walk into town. As a single guy you may be drawn that way, or to say Hulme, which is walkable to town, yet offers a great choice of affordable, and mostly modern, places to live, since regeneration.
We are a mixed race couple and have many gay friends. Sure you get your racists AND homophobes, but it is true this city has a fairly tolerant attitude all round. I work with youngsters and even kids, seen as chavs by some, are tuned into racism and, to a lesser extent, homophobia!
The biggest difference, I find living here, is a feeling of belonging more. I personally have got more involved in community things, local politics etc, than I ever did in London. Since all the regeneration the locals are really proud of the place and it is easy to get swept up in that, because THEY DO have reason to be proud. I am heartened, seeing lots of young people, who graduate here, staying on and making a career, rather than having to move to London, which WAS, when I moved there myself, the only real option, back in the day. Greater Manchester IS on the up. Look at the BBC move to MediaCityUK at Salford Quays etc......
Really hope things work out for you. All the best!!
