I bought a HUGE, very expensive Parakeet cage. But one little bird can get out! Now what?
I have an "abandoned" (for lack of a better word) Parakeet. He had NO attention, was fed every once in a while. The person I got him from isn't bad, but couldn't care for him. I took him home, along with the huge, beautiful cage he was in. I bought 3 friends for him, (4 but 1 died) but one of them constantly gets out. I covered the cage with fake vines, but I can't cover every single hole in that cage. The other 2 either can't or don't want to get out. I don't know anything about parakeets. I've never owned a bird. But I'm doing the best I can, reading up as much as I can about them, feeding them how I'm suppose to, trying to get them out as much as I can, but I still feel like I'm doing something wrong. Now this guy is getting out every which way and I'm scared he's gonna get hurt or my toy poodle will "play" to rough with him and kill him. I normally see when he gets out. He usually flies to me or around me. Smart little things they are. I had NO IDEA! My husband always wanted birds and I said NO! Now that I have them they're awesome. They're just not like dogs that you can play with, sleep next to, you KNOW when they're sad. I've got a million questions, but all I get is half answers. Sorry, got WAY off track there. The cage- what on earth am I going to do? Getting a new cage is completely outa the question. I don't have money for anything extra when I have 4 kids to buy presents for 4 kids in a month :) Any advice would be so wonderful! Please email me at sarahblanco06 at yahoo. I was thinking chicken wire around the cage, but is that safe? I already know it's ugly. You should see this cage. It's black rot iron (I know I spelled that wrong!) and it stands to the VERY top about 6 feet high or more. It's about 3.5 to 4' long. I can get measurements if you need them to recommend something. I like these guys. I want them to be happy. But I also want to be able to leave my house and know they're all 3 going to still be in the cage when I return. Any help would be great!

Try Saran (or whatever brand name) Wrap to cover the holes. The thin transparant type of plastic wrap that will stick to itself. Do youself and your new friends a big favor and start reading everything you can about "caged" birds or "pet" birds, specifically parrots/parakeets/budgies. Your little budgies (Shortened version of the Common name: Budgerigar - An aboriginal term meaning 'good eats') are part of the Family of Parrots and can learn to talk. It's very important for you to know minimum basics about these joyful little birds such as(these are only a few of the subjects you'll need to know): feeding (mostly fresh fruits, veggies and millet, with the parakeet seed diet being only supplementary), poisonous (avocado, chocolate, apple seeds), temperature and cage placement (if a cage is placed near a kitchen for example, TEFLON fumes - both from a pan and teflon-coated oven that when food is overcooked/burned emits fumes, undetectable by humans but can kill budgies within seconds), diseases (budgies are very prone to tumors), and first aid (minimum get Kwik-Stop styptic powder to stop bleeding). The Library is a good source to start with then online books for more indepth subject matter.

you don't want to put something around the cage, that is only a hazard for them to get their heads stuck. What you need to do is what everyone else is saying, "sell the big cage and buy a smaller one" depending on how much your cage is worth you may be able to buy more than one little one and put them side by side. that way they can still be friends, but seriously, please don't put something around the cage, if they get their heads stuck while you're away, they could easily die.

i didn't think parakeets needed friends but i guess you just need a smaller cage
