on an SD memory card, what is the small "lock" button on the side for?

Update:

stil doesnt make sense? does it stop the pictures on it being deleted?

    Yes it will prevent pictures from being deleted. It will also prevent new pictures from being saved so you can't use the camera if the memory card is locked.

    Please put down any sharp objects and walk away from anything electrical. IT'S A LOCK, STOPS YOU WRITING DATA OR DELETING DATA.

    Its exactly what you said, a lock. If its locked you cant use it. If its unlocked you can.

    when you have to copy the files on the computer you have to unlock. then when you have to put it back you have to switch it back to lock. :) hope it helps !
