Why did the guy disappear?

Met a guy online, on the first date hit it off incredibly. We went out lots of times after that, he even planned a big out of town celebration for my birthday. He was a blast, was great with my two girls, my friends even liked him. We saw each other for about two months until one day he was supposed to come hang out and never showed. I called once and texted twice with no response. That Monday I emailed him and said that I guessed he was blowing me off. No answer. I just let it go. About a month later I get an email from him apologizing and saying he disappeared because he was scared he was falling for me and couldn't start a relationship and leave me a year later (hes in the army and here for school). He said that he thought about it tho and wanted to see me again if I didn't hate him. Against my better judgement I said ok and he said he would check his weekend schedule and let me know. Never heard from him again. I don't think the kid thing was the issue because he has a kid of his own, and yes, I was giving "it" up. I also made it clear to him I was willing to move if he and I became serious. Any thoughts?
